Metairie Rotary hears how trained dogs help veterans
On a June 23rd luncheon meeting of the Metairie Rotary at Metairie Country Club, members were informed of a program that joins veterans with a trained service dogs to help them in their daily lives. Some of the canine assistance skills are vision, walking, fetching meds, keys or any other objects the veteran may need, or any jobs that are hard for the vet to do. The Veteran bonds with the dog, and has instant therapy and help.
Every week many dogs are bonded with their new owner and the vets are able to go home with their dogs, right away. Ongoing training is also provided to veterans at the Companions for Life facility, located at the Jefferson Parish SPCA.

Ribbon-cutting Ceremony: Veterans Service Dog Training Program & Facility
Elmwood, Louisiana, 9/25/15—Friday, September 25 will be the grand opening of our new program and facility at Jefferson Parish SPCA. The program, Companions for Life, will teach military Veterans to train their own service dogs, as well as service dogs for other Veterans to assist them with PTSD and TBI. This program will not only give Veterans an opportunity to own an affordable service dog, it will also give them marketable skills for career opportunities.
Unlike our other program, From the Big House to Your House, this is the only program in Louisiana that is a service dog training program for Veterans, by Veterans. It’s a concept that we’re excited to be hosting in our home state with our local partners.
The Companions for Life training facility is a joint venture co-sponsored by DoggoneExpress and Brothers & Sisters in Arms. The facility is dedicated to Aaron Kemp, an Iraq veteran who died of a seizure 2 days after receiving his service dog that was trained in our From the Big House to Your House program.
